Can you name a few great vacation spots for a couple.
I live in MN but it doesn’t have to be close, just in the US. (we are planning on driving).
possibly low cost
We like to hike and be outside but I would like to have lodging near by for the nights.
Don’t really want to go somewhere real tropical though (not Florida, Hawaii or islands)

You could go to someplace like Yellowstone or another national park if you like to be outside. Or a cheap idea is just going to an art/science museum for one day, sleeping over at a hotel, then just going to a local place recommender by the locals the next. Hope I helped!

Try staying in the KOA camping cabins. They are located near just about all the big cities , parks and amusements. Just bring a little camping stove and griddle to make breakfast and some dinners.
