The very BEST value for the money is to stay at a Bed & Breakfast. Each offers a unique experience. All furnish snorkel gear, beach towels, suntan lotion, even kayaks, bbq grills, and yummy, fresh local food. If you like the hotel experience and lots of crowd-watching, the B & B experience may not be for you.
If you’re going now, in the Winter, find a B & B on Oahu’s North Shore when many of the pro surfing events are in full swing. Or gook a bungalow in Kailua or Lanikai, the beach always featured on TV commercials and always voted ‘Best Beach’ in all the international travel magazines.
If you are going outer island and want the B & B experience, stay out of Kaanapali, Maui, or head to Princeville Kauai instead of Poipu. On the Big Island, look in the Puna District, Waimea, Kohala or North Kona. The Hilo side of the Big Island has more to do, but lots of rain. On the Big Island, in winter, you could even go skiing or snowboarding on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or if you like it really quiet, head for either the island of Lanai or Molokai for great snorkeling and diving, boat tours and some great beaches.
I’ve always been an “anti-tourist” that prefers to go where the locals go. Doesn’t matter if I’m traveling to Ireland, back to my home state of Hawaii, or even the other side of Washington State where I live.
Different strokes for different folks. To quote a line from Forrest Gump: B & B’s are “like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” And that’s what makes it an adventure. Just go have fun!
Aqua Plams resort and spa has a great deal and it’s pretty nice. Hilton Hawaiian Village is by far the best place to stay on the island, but I believe it is pretty expensive-but well worth the money! Enjoy your trip to Hawaii!
Edit: I forgot to add Ko’Olina! It is my favorite place on the Island. It has it’s own beaches, and pools of course. I’m not sure what the price range it is, but it is absolutely beautiful and a little more secluded over there! They are also building a Disney resort over there now, but I wouldn’t recommend staying there unless you are traveling with kids.
